Here are a selection of particular cases that we hope highlight how we approach customers needs and which should also give a good insight as to how we work together to provide ideas, answers and new products that perform well consistently.

Stretch Hood for Tarmac.

Product: Stretch Hood (memory retention co-ex pallet film) for wrapping 25kg sacks packed with a moisture sensitive product

Tarmac Building Products is the UK’s largest supplier of heavy building products including blocks, bagged aggregates, mortar, screeds, sports surfaces, foundry sands, grouts, plasters, renders, bagged cement and bagged lime.

BRIEF

In this particular case we were asked to provide a solution for a long-standing problem from a different supplier. They required a high-performance film that would give them;

  • Good memory retention for a high holding force on the pallet
  • High stretch value to allow a smaller tube size to be used
  • Easy sealing with a high strength weld
  • Correct slip value on the inner layer for full pallet length application
  • Puncture and tear resistance
  • High clarity for product ID in the warehouse

SOLUTIONS

Using premium resins we decided to run with two formulations; one that was more “elastic” and one that was “harder” with a greater holding force. The film Tarmac was previously using was a 1850mm tube x 120mu clear PE. Having calculated the pallet size and sack configuration and foot print, we decided that our film would work with the following smaller tube size;

1700mm tube (8% less film) x 120mu clear PE (film thickness reduction to follow)

Both films tested worked with the stretch, wrapping and memory retention snap performing extremely well.

CONCLUSIONS

The stretch hood performed and exceeded the expectations of Tarmac given the problems they had encountered with the previous supplier at the first attempt (with both recipes tried) a well wrapped pallet was achieved with a high holding force > the “harder” recipe is used as it has a slightly better holding force we used 8% less film which contributed to a lower total material cost we were able to reduce the sealing temperature which gave energy savings Tarmac could look forward to packing and wrapping their 25kg sacks without any concern relating to outside storage, transportation and moisture ingress the future development plan is to reduce the tube size again, allied to reducing film thickness. This will bring cost savings to Tarmac with a higher quality product.

This is what we set out to achieve > product excellence that brings greater performance to our customers.
